Waterbeach Barracks, originally RAF Waterbeach, is home to 39 Engineer Regiment which provides engineer support to both the Royal Air Force (RAF) and to United Kingdom Land Forces. One of only 2 regular Air Support regiments in the British Army it is particularly "construction centric" and has a considerable construction capability. Waterbeach is also home to 25 Engineer Regiment. Both are part of 12 (Air Support) Engineer Group.

In July 2011 the Ministry of Defence announced that Waterbeach Barracks will close. In November 2011 the Ministry of Defence announced that 39 Engineer Regiment would move to RAF Kinloss in the summer of 2012. HQ 12 (Air Support) Engineer Group will move from Waterbeach to RAF Wittering in the summer of 2013, enabling the closure of Waterbeach Barracks by December 2013. (info courtesy of Wikipedia)

Waterbeach Village is 5 miles north of Cambridge. It is a fairly large village and has all the necessary amenities, i.e. Butchers, bakers, 2 hairdressers, 3 pubs, Chinese takeaway, post Office, 2 convenience stores, a tandoori restaurant/takeaway a chemist and a fish and chip shop. The Service Families Area is a 10 - 15 minute walk to the village Centre.

The Barracks has a well-equipped gym with the usual collection of exercise machines. There is a 9-hole golf course, which has a full time green keeper and is open to both military and limited civilian membership. From May to September the outdoor pool is open in the Barracks.
